WALTER HORST PRIEBST (1922 - 2005)

Caminante entre mundos
Nació en Dresden, estudió en las Academias de Bellas Artes de Dresden y Hamburgo, emigró a Estados Unidos, fue reconocido nacionalmente como artista en México, tuvo talleres en Creta y Munich: el pintor, escultor y diseñador de joyas Walter Horst Priebst, nacido en 1922 en Olbernhau cerca de Dresden, era un caminante entre muchos mundos.

Su patria del alma era México, donde en los años 1967 hasta 1983 tuvo gran éxito con sus cuadros y, sobre todo, con la elaboración de joyas artísticas de esmalte en la técnica “Cloisonnee”, siguiendo el estilo tradicional mexicano.

Siempre unió la tradición con la modernidad y animó a sus compañeros mexicanos a creer y confiar en su propia cultura. Su compromiso fue reconocido y se le concedieron varios galardones. Su obra fue adquirido para formar parte de colecciones de arte, y tuvo exposiciones en todo el continente americano.

Cuando volvió a Europa, se estableció en Munich y Creta. Sobre todo en la isla griega se sintió cerca de su México amado, tanto por el clima como por las relaciones humanas. Sus cuadros y trabajos figurativos – los “diarios de mis experiencias” – reflejan su relación profunda con mundos interiores.

Wanderer between the worlds
Born in Dresden, studies at the universities of art of Dresden and Hamburg, emigration to the USA, state artist in Mexico, studios on the isle of Crete and in Munich. The painter, sculptor and jewellery designer, Walter Horst Priebst was a wanderer between many worlds.

He felt artisticly complete in Mexico where his method of creating artistic enamel jewellery in traditional Mexican design created a furore in Mexico by working according to the Cloisonnée technique between 1967 and 1983.

At all times he combined tradition and modern art, simultaneously encouraging his Mexican colleagues to cultural self-esteem. His engagement was honoured by numerous prizes and art collection purchases. Exhibitions all over the American continent exposed his works of art.

After returning to Europe he settled down in Munich and on the isle of Crete. It was there on Crete that he found the climate and his relationship with the Greek people similar to his beloved Mexico. His paintings and sculptures – the “Tagebücher meiner Erlebnisse (Diaries of my Experiences)” – reflect his attachment to inner worlds.
